St John’s School Shelters

St John’s School, Pendleton Road, Redhill As a part of a national scheme of Heritage Open Days the Borough of Reigate and Banstead is opening the doors of St John’s School in Redhill on Sunday 13th September between 11am and 4pm. The school dates back to 1850 and is home to two world war two air raid shelters, one of which was painted with murals by pupils during the war. Tours of the school will take place every 15 minutes, and for those unable to negotiate the shelters steps there will be a DVD being shown with interviews with former pupils and staff, a virtual tour of the shelters and footage of the murals actually being painted. The Heritage Open Day scheme allows free access to historic buildings which are not normally open to the public. Write up above is referenced from: http://www.thebestof.co.uk
